A List of 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival Homes in the Los Angeles Area – DIRT

Around 60 years ago, rumor has it that James H. Duffy knocked on the door of this Spanish Colonial Revival residence unannounced and asked if the owners would be interested in selling. Turns out they were – and they sold to Duffy, whose father was the artisan blacksmith who designed the custom ornamental wrought iron work for the Eagle Rock home in the 1920s, when he first build.

Since then, the place has remained in the Duffy family; now, the historic gem has hit the open market for the first time, fetching just over $2.9 million.

Originally designed and built in 1924 by famed builder/architect Godfrey Edwards of Edwards Wildey and Dixon, the three-story stucco and terracotta structure has been extensively renovated over the years. Nestled behind a gated wall, on a 0.6 acre plot resting atop a hill with picturesque hillside views, the home features five bedrooms and five bathrooms in just over 3,700 square feet of living space. Modernized living space brimming with period details like original hardwood floors, mosaic tiles and arched doorways.

A walkway crosses a manicured lawn before spilling into a front yard and an arched front door opening into a formal entrance. Ahead, a sun-drenched living room boasts a stacked stone fireplace and a formal dining room has French doors that open to a screened loggia, while the gourmet kitchen is outfitted with quartz counter tops, custom cabinetry , sink and apron top Bertazzoni top level appliances.

A walnut paneled library with built-in bookshelves is also found on the main level, along with three bedrooms including a two-room master suite with French doors leading to a lanai. Elsewhere in the house are two additional bedrooms – one on the lower level with its own entrance and bathroom, and an upstairs bedroom with a steeple and terrazzo-covered balcony.

Outside, the private backyard houses a central courtyard with plenty of space for alfresco dining and lounging next to a cozy fire pit and custom brick and wood gazebo. There is also a detached two car garage which has been fully finished with wood paneled walls and a soaking tub.
