Del Norte history professor recognized as outstanding

Karen Dziurzynski Cox has been named the State’s Outstanding Teacher of American History by the Daughters of the American Revolution Society of New Mexico.

Karen is automatically entered into the organization’s national competition which culminates in recognition at the Washington, DC conference this summer.

Karen is a James Madison Senior Fellow (a prestigious congressional scholarship) and earned the title of “Constitutional Teacher-Scholar” when she completed her second master’s degree in American History and Government at Ashland University in Ohio.

She grew up in Albuquerque and attended APS schools. Karen received her bachelor’s degree from Humboldt State University in Arcata, California, and her first master’s degree from UNM. She recently taught a Master-Teacher Seminar with the Society of the Cincinnati’s American Revolution Institute regarding American Revolutionary War hero Kosciouszko.

Karen recently became a member of the DAR through a Spanish conquistador ancestor who helped fund the American Revolutionary War.

Karen has been teaching history and social studies for about 20 years. She is married to fellow educator Patrick J. Cox, who teaches music at Manzano HS. Their son, Sage, teaches at Bernalillo High School. Their daughter, Georgiana, and son-in-law, Adam Bowers, are respectively a nurse at Presbyterian Hospital and a computer engineer at Sandia Labs.
